Eastern Market to replace 87-year-old shed with a two-story facility

The Eastern Market Development Corp. is looking for a construction manager to oversee the construction of a new enclosed shed to replace the existing open-air Shed No. 4.

A request for qualifications issued June 24 seeks statements of qualifications to lead the building of the new two-story shed, which would be about 14,000 square feet and have 54 vendor stalls.

Those materials are due to the EMDC — the real estate development arm of the Eastern Market Partnership, the nonprofit that operates the Eastern Market district — by July 20. Those who meet the minimum requirements will be asked to submit a cost estimate.

The existing Shed No. 4 is 87 years old, and “no longer serves the evolving needs of the public market,” according to the RFQ. Located off Russell Street between Division and Alfred streets, it is one of three such open-air sheds in Eastern Market.

Detroit-based Kraemer Design Group is the project architect. In addition to the vendor stalls, the redesigned Shed 4 building would include things like meeting, office, commercial and instructional kitchen spaces, according to a press release.

“Shed 4 represents the next chapter in Eastern Market’s continued evolution as a center for commerce, entrepreneurship, food access and community connection,” said Sarah Pavelko, EMDC executive director, in a statement. “We’re looking for a construction partner that understands the significance of this project and can help us deliver a facility that serves the needs of our market community for generations to come.”

The RFQ comes on the heels of the EMDC opening Shed No. 7, the popular district’s first new shed in four decades, Crain’s reported earlier this week.
